TITLE: Singleness and Rejection By thea english 11/20/04 |

There was this guy that I went out with and thought was real nice. He always treated me with respect, we had a nice conversation on the phone, and he thought I was a nice person. But soon after, the phone calls stopped, the dates stopped and I interpreted it as rejection from him. I’m still reeling from that incident but I realized that maybe we weren’t right for each other. After all, we both work so we rarely get a chance to see each other. And you know, it’s hard to understand how someone who I thought was interested in me could leave me hanging but I decided to stop calling him because I don’t want to remain in a friendship that may not be going anywhere. Then I’m trying to figure out what I did wrong. When I talked to him, it was mainly short talk although we did have some serious moments. I would try to cheer him up but the only time I could call him was after work, which was usually around 11:00 at night. I tried calling on his off days before heading to work but the phone would just ring. Not only that, but I see him twice a week at night because he drives the bus I have to catch to get home. We say hi and bye and we’re on friendly terms but I don’t know what to do in this situation. Just how would a person interpret this? It’s times like this that I wonder what men are thinking.
But I also need to see things from God’s perspective. I don’t know His exact timing for certain events in my life right now so the only thing I can do is trust Him with the broken friendship. Maybe God needs to work on both of us before He can bring us back together, or it could be that He has someone better in mind for me but not now. Rejection is especially painful if you like a person a lot and you’re given the cold shoulder instead.
We live in a world that stresses the romantic side of relationships and I think romance is good, but I don’t want a relationship that’s superficial and based on physical attributes. I want to love the other person the way God loves me and I expect that from him. I can’t tell you how many times young men told me,” I can’t believe you don’t have a boyfriend. You’re a sweet person and attractive.” I can’t really answer them. Being a Christian single carries a heavy price because when you don’t compromise your faith, rejections will come. But when that day comes and I stand in front of the person God chose for me, I’ll look at this article and just laugh at my disappointment during my single years. And I’ll say, “God, you knew what you were doing and you saved me from the heartache of unhealthy relationships over the years.”
