TITLE: DON'T CALL US POOR! By Fay K. Miller 10/30/04 |
|
Yet desires of our hearts were often in lack.
This country girl wanted jeans like the rest
But bargain corduroys, my mother found best.
I wanted a bike for my country school walk.
Dad found a “fixer upper,” so that’s what I got.
It’s style was English with very skinny tires.
Yet trendy balloon tires were my heart’s desire.
New toys came as hand-me-downs, most clothing as well;
But we took good care and no one could tell.
We were clean and scrubbed and smiles on our face;
Compliments came to Mom – not any disgrace.
There never was money for movies or trips.
With a family of seven, there were frequent hardships.
There were always mealtimes though variety was slight.
Sometimes just one thing was our meal at night.
A mistake of my life when adulthood was mine
Was to mention my early years as poor, yet fine.
My Mothers was crushed; angry was she,
As “the love of the Lord was all that need be.”
We children were their wealth. Very loved were we.
Provision was adequate and never ceased to be.
God was our source; we worshipped and served Him.
But don’t call us poor; it couldn’t have been!
We were given a godly heritage
In our godly home!!
(A very true story.)
