TITLE: A Sunday Lesson By Tammie Smith 08/13/04 |
|
“I don't want to go to Sunday school today” I whined to my mom as I put the dishes into the dishwasher.
Mom just looked at me with an irritated look and said “I don't want to hear it. Why is it that sundays, is always the hardest morning to get ready?”
My dad yells from the bath “that is because the devil is trying to keep us away.”
I mutter to myself as I head to my room to change into my pink sun dress “I wish he would keep us away today.” With a big sigh I start getting dressed. I find the pink sun dress and matching white sandals. While I was brushing my hair I thought myself that mom just didn't understand what it was like to be twelve years old. Life just isn't fair sometimes. I realy wished I didn't have to go to Sunday School today. Plopping across my bed with a big sigh, I hear a knock at the door.
“Honey, can I come in?” I hear my mom say in a much gentler voice than earlier.
“Come in mom” I replied.
“Oh, honey, you look beautiful. Do you want to talk about why you don't want to go to Sunday school?”
Looking at my mom with my sweetest smile I said “I am just tired and I just didn't want to go. That is all.”
“Honey, now tell me the truth why don't you want to go?” She asked.
With an ache I say “They always pick on me because I know most of the answers.”
“Honey, that is a good thing.”
“A good thing,” I say with a questioning look. “How can this be a good thing?”
“You know the answers because you have a good grip on the bible because you read it daily. You also have a strong faith for someone so young. You are an inspiration to me.”
“So why do they pick on me? I thought that reading the bible, and being able to answer the question is what we are suppose to do” I asked.
After a few minutes of a pause my mom looked at me and said “Honey, they are probably jealous because you do know the answers. The best thing you can do is pray for them and when they pick on you then you just turn the other cheek. You never strike back or pick on them in return.”
“Thanks for listening mom.”
“Would you like to pray together before we leave?” she asked.
“Yes, I would” I replied. Then closing my eyes and bowing my head I began 'Father, please help me to remember to love my neighbors and to only show kindness to them even if they are being cruel to me. Father, I also pray that the ones that are picking on me look inwards and see what is making them unhappy. Then help them to deal with this father. In Jesus Name, Amen'
When we were finished, we left for church. I smiled all the way there and into my Sunday school class. I was glad I had God on my side today. I always feel stronger when I have God on my side.
