The desires and longings of our third grade girls
Was to be perfect as Bobbi and Billie
Smart and beautiful, with hair in quaffed curls,
In their class rooms the vengeance was silly
When one would wear red, the other wore green,
They were slender, confident, and tall,
And where ever they went, their poise could be seen
And they always seemed to be having a ball
The idol, the model, to all girls a friend
Whatever she asked they would do
A mentor, a sister, a pal to the end,
In room five at our school, Bobbi ruled.
But room three was different, for Billie was there
Where the Brownies and Bluebirds did meet.
She was kind, considerate and eager to share
And sometimes, she’d give up her seat.
Though very alike in their features, you’d say
That their differences were subtle and few.
But the rivalry grew between rooms 5 and 3
And sometimes a fight would ensue
For Bobbi and Billie the children did see
As iconic idylls to obtain
For if once we might share in what they could see
Forever our hopes might remain.
In our third grade classes they taught us to know
How arithmetic problems were solved
To spell, and to read, and in life to grow
And in trouble how to remain calm.
For Bobbi and Billie were teachers you see
At Mirage Elementary School
And the rivalry between rooms 5 and 3
Was to see which classroom would rule.
Now 30 years later, the Fokelman Twins
Are teaching still at my old school
The rivalry now, is to see who will win
The courting of Mr. O’Doul.
