TITLE: True Life By Donna Smith 06/07/04 |

Laying on her death bed,
Withered down by time.
She shakily reaches for-
This youthful hand of mine.
Feebly she takes it;
Softer than a rose.
My throat lumps,
Her eyes no longer closed.
There’s clarity in their depths;
As I try to control my tears.
I want to be strong for her,
As she’s been for me these years.
She knows,
All my aching thoughts.
For she tries to speak,
On a painful cough.
“Shh, Mama
Don’t try to speak.”
Reaching for a chair,
My knees growing weak.
“Oh God,” my heart cries
“Do not take her now-
One more day I beg,
Before I adorn the shroud.”
“Baby,” she whispers
“Do you hear?
The angels are singing,
My God is drawing near.”
The floodgates are opened,
My tears freely slide.
Why should she suffer?
Forgive this heart of mine.
Her grip has grown much tighter.
Where is this strength she bares?
“Look Baby,
A man is standing there!”
I look.
“Mama, I don’t see.”
My spirit quickens,
Could it really be?
“Do you see Jesus?
Mama, answer me!”
“Oh, isn’t He beautiful?
Baby, come with me.”
I rest my head,
On her weary arm.
My tears anointing her body,
Yet I feel a peaceful calm.
Her life has not ended,
As I gaze at the wall.
It has just begun.
For she answered, His call.
