The Bible teaches us, ‘to let our light so shine, that people may see our good works and glorify our father in heaven.’
How can I glorify my father? By living a life of holiness. This is the only way in which I can glorify my father in heaven. Every area of my life needs to be holy, not just a part; there cannot be any hidden sins in my heart.
We as Christians need to shine so brightly, that the world around us will not want to stay in darkness.
I was born and raised in Jamaica until I was thirteen years old. I remember as a child, our area no electricity. The entire district was totally dark at night; no matter how much I wanted to see, even if it was only five feet in front of me, this was impossible, the darkness made me feel alone and afraid.
When my grandmother would light up the kerosene lamp, what a difference that would make? I would be able to see wherever I took that lamp; it enabled me to see so I could go to and fro and not be afraid.
As a Christian, I can shine my light and I can walk in confidence knowing that God is with me.
After my grandmother lit that lamp, if I choose to blow that light out, (and sometimes the breeze did,) I would be in total darkness once again.
If we as Christians shine our light only for a short while, and then step back into the things of this world, we will leave a negative effect on the people around us. We cannot for one moment allow our lights only to shine on Sunday, and then go back to our old life on Monday.
Some nights my grandmother would walk from one room to another. She would light a lamp in each room and then she would leave them burning. This lit up the entire house, and then I was able to walk from one room to another. God wants us as his followers of Christ to take our light wherever we go.
As Christians walking around in this world where there is so much darkness, we can shine our light so brightly, so that the people around us will want what we have.
When each person grabs a hold of the light, one by one this world will light up for Jesus, thereby preparing our hearts for his return.
