Raindrops
I’m standing at the open doorway watching my son play in the rain. His dad’s bright yellow rubber rain jacket fits his 3yr old frame like a tent. He is so adorable! Hunched over, he pushes his toy truck through a giant puddle. “Vrrrmmm! Vrrrmmm!”
He’s having so much fun that he is oblivious to the rest of the world. Just a little boy caught up in his own little world. Exploring new puddles, laughing against splashes taller than him, and smiling as raindrops tickle his soft pink cheeks. Every moment holds something new and exciting for him. He’s having so much fun he doesn’t even see me standing in the doorway.
Gentle rain keeps falling, forming tiny ripples in the water. Splash, splash, splash! I too, am caught up in the moment. Raindrops carefully tease my face as I watch my child explore his world, and my heart smiles. Right now nothing else exists. I love watching him. I don’t mind or even consider that he isn’t aware of my presence. I am satisfied that he knows I am nearby. That is enough. If he needs me I am here. When he is ready he will look up and see me here.
A brilliant rainbow sings of its presence against the darkened sky.
I stand waiting and watching. In a while my son looks up at me and smiles. He is glad I am sharing this moment with him.
In this same moment I am reminded that someone is watching me too. At times I am too busy playing and working to notice that he is there. At times I am oblivious to anything outside my own little world. But, once in a while, I look up and see him there, watching over me. And I smile. I am glad he is sharing this moment with me. He cares about everything I do. Even when I’m not looking he watches over me. If I ever need him he is there waiting and ready to meet my needs. He holds me in his arms and loves me and tells me how special I am.
He doesn’t mind the moments that I am not aware of his presence. They are still special moments for him. I am his child and he is my father…my Heavenly Father.
When I am oblivious to everything outside my little world He is watching me and smiling. He knows I am enjoying the life He gave me.
We have a special bond. Like that of a parent and child, our relationship is safe and comfortable. He knows where I am. I know where He is. He’s always watching me and smiling as he holds me in the palm of His hand.
I find myself wondering if these could be moments that He is oblivious to everything in His world because He is so enamored with us, His children. He loves each of us and treasures every moment He shares with us. Is it possible that in these moments He wants to give each of us the very best of His world? Perhaps that’s why He sends us a little rain to tickle our cheeks, puddles to splash in and, sometimes, a rainbow against our dark skies to remind us He is watching over us.
