Have you ever wondered what one thing, has seen almost everything since creation began? What saw our world when it was without form and void and in darkness? The Bible says that the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the deep, which indicates that it was water. Water then covered everything that God had begun to create and so water would see everything from that point on.
It would see something come out of nothing. Where there was no land and no life, water would see dry land appear and life begin to take form on those islands of soil and rock and in the air surrounding them. It would also see life take form within it and was there when man was placed in the Garden of Eden, the place where four rivers met, and the mans journey, as we know it began.
It would see that perfect creation, now become imperfect as man chooses to please self rather than God. Man and woman would fall from the perfect position with God and all of creation would pay the price in pain for their sin. It would see that now imperfect creation, judged, destroyed and then grace applied. Water would see the windows of heaven opened, the fountains of the earth gush forth, and every living thing on the dry land destroyed with the exception of the few lives which rode through the judgment in an ark made by man under the instruction of God. It would see man given a chance to redeem himself but unable to do so and it would see the reflection of the rainbow in its surface which would indicate always, the grace of God toward His creation.
It would see man’s rebellion dealt with when a man, running from the will of God was swallowed by a prepared sea creature and for three days wallowed in the depths of the sea until regurgitated upon dry land. It would be evidence of God’s discipline but also His patience with His creation.
It would see the Creator of the universe exhibit control upon the Sea of Galilee when the Son of Man would raise His hands against the elements and the sea, wind and storm ceased at His instruction.
Imagine if you can, that our world is like a giant thermos bottle. When it was created, a certain number of gallons of water, zillions I am sure, was placed in our world. Since that time, none has been added but our space programs have removed a miniscule amount. The same water then, which saw the beginning of all that exists on earth, is still here today. It has changed form, it has perhaps been moved by evaporation, pipeline, and other means to other parts of the world from whence it started, but it is still the same water.
Think then that the next drop of water that you drink, may be the one for which the rich man begged to be placed on his parched, tormented tongue. It may have been the very water used by Pilate to wash His hands at the trial of Jesus. Water gives us much to think about and be a little more in awe of, because it has seen it all.
