As she continued to look around the room, she didn't understand why the church decided to use this building for their food drive. The place was very old. All around her the wallpaper was yellow and crumbled. If you touched it, it would fall to pieces. The chairs were raggedy. You could see the stuffing slowly peeking out at the corners. Everything didnt look very appealing.
Jessica walked around trying to find the church director, Mrs Pollack. She looked around every room, but she couldnt find her. Jessica knew she was a very busy woman, so she couldnt be in one particular spot. But she was growing impatient.
"Why cant we start now?" she muttered to herself. Plopping down on a chair, she decided she would give up trying to find her.
Feeling someone standing behind her she turned around. A woman maybe in her early thirties or more stood looking at her. She had frizzy white hair and blue eyes. Her clothes were a little torn and she had worn out street sneakers. Jessica wondered where she came from, but the thought was pushed aside.
The woman looked at her with deep desperation in her eyes. She said, "Young lady, is this where that food drive is located?"
Jessica nodded. "Yes, but we aren't going to be open for another few minutes."
The woman bowed her head down, disappointed. She began to walk away, but then stopped and looked at Jessica.
"oh well. I thought you were open. You see, I was coming here for help. I haven't eaten for a couple of days maybe a week. I have children at home who are hungry, buti dont have enough money to buy food. I have nowhere else to go. So i thought i would come here."
Jessica felt sorry for her. But she knew that they werent allowed to start early. She was tempted to turn her away, but something told her to help.
Jessica walked into the kitchen and looked for something to give the lady. Finalyy she noticed a basket full of food. Reaching for it, she grabbed it and walked back to the lady.
Jessica handed her the basket. "Here you go. I hope this helps."
The woman looked at her with tears in her eyes. "Thank you so much. I'm so grateful." God Bless you". And with that the lady started walking away.
Jessica was happy she helped the woman, but she felt something was missing. Reaching down she went into her pockets and pulled out some money. Calling the woman over, she took her hands and put the money in her hands. The woman smiled and gave her a hug, thanking her again. And with that she left the room.
Just seeing the happiness on the woman's face made her feel good. She didnt feel grumpy like she did before, but instead felt peace. A scripture popped in her head saying, "Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
