My God,
Savior,
Friend . . .
When He gazes on
My story
Of life upon the earth . . .
What will the Master see
With His eye that never sleeps,
Never misses,
Never errors,
Seeing both
Visible
and
Invisible?
I’d like to show Him what surely will impress.
The endless list of
Building projects and
Youth programs . . .
The countless
Church picnics and
Christmas pageants . . .
The weekly tithes,
The generous gifts, and
The benevolent donations . . .
Must certainly
Catch His
Eye.
Or might I be mistaken?
Could it be His sense of value is so contrary to my own?
Will He point to some small act,
Lost to memory,
Done in the shadows
To one of the “least of these”?
Was it taking just a moment for a child,
Was it listening to a grandpa,
Was it sitting there, saying nothing to a wife just-made-widow
That most pleased the Great I AM?
I need not wait till Judgment Day to know the Master’s wishes.
In His Word, His command is clear to
“Love one another.”
But day and night,
Without a rest,
Without a second to spare,
I’m consumed with golden steeples and parking lots,
With offering plates and choir gowns,
With worship songs and microphones,
With Greek nouns and Hebrew verbs,
Forgetting the
who and why
for the
When, where, and what.
Enough!
When will I learn to invest the Master’s way?
He’s not asking for my millions.
No, indeed—
Much more!
He’s asking for
My heart,
My mind,
My LIFE!
To imitate the greatest Lover,
Who still seeks the greatest sinner.
To love like Jesus does.
