Sold under sin I am its slave,
As things stand my outlook’s fatal—
I cannot change how I behave.
All my efforts end in failure
I stand condemned before its bar,
I can never meet its measure—
How powerless we sinners are!
But this perception is a blessing,
The law has done its work in me,
The more I find my guilt distressing
The closer am to liberty.
I sought The Lord and His salvation
And graciously He answered me,
What in law was obligation
I now would do delightedly.
By His Spirit now indwelling
The love of God now fills my soul
No longer at His law rebelling
For Jesus Christ is in control.
Fruit of The Spirit daily growing,
Works of the flesh have lost their gloss,
Love of God now overflowing
Since I saw love nailed to the cross.
Love is now my motivation—
Love for God and my fellow man
Since I became a new creation—
Love consummates what law began.
