“He was pierced for our transgressions .
He was crushed for our sins . The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him
And by His wounds,
By His wounds, we are healed”
Her eight year old daughter, Amanda, was sitting at the kitchen table coloring. She put down her crayon and listened while her mom finished the song.
“Mom?” Asked Amanda.
“What, darlin’,” replied mom.
“What does that song mean anyway. Who was pierced? What are transgressions? And who got wounded,” Amanda asked perplexingly.
Mom rinsed her hands and wiped them on the nearby towel then came to the table and sat with Amanda.
“You ask some great questions, honey. Let me try and explain. The song is talking about Jesus being pierced in his hands and feet for the sins of the world when they hung him on the cross. Our transgressions are the sins that we commit every day. And the Bible talks about the wounds that Jesus bore on our behalf to pay for our sin. Why don’t you run to your room and get your Bible and we’ll look up some verses.”
Amanda hopped off her chair and scurried into her room to get her Living Bible. She brought it to her mom. “Amanda, open to the book Isaiah? It’s in the Old Testament.”
“I know where that is,” replied Amanda. “Got it!”
“Okay, now find chapter fifty-three and read verse five.”
Amanda started reading,
‘But he was wounded and bruised for our sins. He was beaten that we might have peace; he was lashed—and we were healed!
“Is that talking about Jesus?” Asked Amanda.
“Yes it is. Now read 1 Peter 3:18 in the New Testament.
Amanda read, “Christ also suffered. He died once for the sins of all us guilty sinners although he himself was innocent of any sin at any time, that he might bring us safely home to God”
“Mom, am I a sinner?”
“Amanda, we all sin. The question you need to ask yourself is - do you know your sins are forgiven and that you will go to heaven one day.”
With a quivering voice Amanda replied, “I’m not sure. How can I know for sure?”
“Amanda,” mom said. “Go to your room and bring me a white, black and red piece of construction paper from your art supply. Bring your scissors too. I’m going to tell you a story.”
Amanda did as she was asked and returned with the supplies her mom asked for.
Mom took the white paper and cut out a large heart.
She took the black paper and cut out five small circles.
She took the red paper and cut out a cross.
Then mom shared this story with Amanda. “Amanda, this white heart represents your heart before sin entered the world. It is nice and clean. You remember the story of Adam and Eve, how sin entered the world through their disobedience. Amanda, have you ever sinned?”
“Well,” thought Amanda. “I lied to my brother.”
Mom took one black circle and laid it on the heart.
“I took a cookie when you told me not to.”
Mom laid another black circle on the heart. Each time Amanda mentioned a sin her. Mom placed a black circle on the heart in the form of a cross.
“Amanda,” mom said. “When Jesus died on the cross he was beaten and pierced and suffered a lot and he did that to pay for your sin and mine. Jesus is the only way we can have our sins forgiven and know we have eternal life. When you ask Jesus to forgive you and invite him into your life something wonderful happens.”
“What?” Asked Amanda.
Mom took the cross and placed it over the black dots. “Jesus forgives you. All your sin is taken away. Your heart is nice and clean again. Amanda, would you like to ask Jesus into your heart to forgive you.”
“Yes, mommy, I would!”
Let’s talk to Jesus.
The two of them offered a short prayer of confession and forgiveness and Amanda invited Jesus into her heart that day.
“Wow, mom!” Amanda said excitedly. “I feel wonderful. Like something exciting is happening inside me.”
Mom smiled, and hugged her daughter. “That’s the Holy Spirit coming alongside you. A life-time gift to you from Jesus. ”
“Thanks Mom, and thank you Jesus for being pierced for me. I love you.”
