“Todays weather is sunny with a temperature of seventy degrees,” replied Alexa.
Perfect day for a walk in the park, thought Janet, as she laced up her sneakers and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge.
She walked to the corner, crossed the street and started her walk along the path that led around the lake. The sun caused the lake to look like it was decorated in sparkly diamonds. “Love this time of day,” Janet said to herself.
As she rounded the bend she stopped. There, laying on the park bench, was the most adorable black puppy she had ever seen. She walked over, sat down beside him, then started petting him. “Where did you come from little fella’,” she asked.
Puppy simply looked up at her and wagged his tail.
“Where is your master? Are you lost?” Janet laughed at the thought of herself talking to this puppy - as though he would actually answer her.
“Woof!” Came the reply.
Janet gave him one last pat and then began her walk again.
Puppy jumped down from the bench and started following her. “Oh no you don’t,” said Janet. “You need to go home, wherever that is.”
“Woof.”
Janet wondered what she should do. “Guess I’ll just keep walking and see what puppy does,” she said to herself.
Puppy continued to follow, happily wagging his tail.
Janet picked up a stick. “Puppy, would you like to chase this stick?”
“Woof. Woof”
She threw the stick. Puppy ran after it, bringing it back each time. He seemed to enjoy this game they were playing. Janet threw the stick one last time, as far as she could. As puppy took off after the stick, Janet bolted into a fast jog hoping to get far away from the dog. He needed to find his way home.
She made it to her street and as she stopped to check for cars, a little puppy came running and sat beside her, stick in his mouth, and dutifully waited for cars to pass.
“Good grief,” sighed Janet. “Can’t I get rid of you?”
She crossed the street and headed home, a little puppy by her side.
Going to her back deck she sat in a lounge chair. Puppy dropped the stick and jumped into her lap. Fifteen minutes later her eight year old son showed up.
“Hey Jack, how was school?”
“Okay. Hey, mom, where’d you get the dog?”
“This cute little guy followed me home from the park. What do you think we should do? He must belong to someone,” stated Janet.
“I think we should keep him,” Jack said excitedly, clapping his hands. “Losers weepers, finders keepers, right mom?”
“I don’t know Jack, there might be another little boy looking for his lost puppy. We’ll ask dad what to do when he gets home.”
“Can I play with him?”
“I guess so,” said mom as she placed puppy on the floor.
“Come on fella, let’s go chase my ball,” and off they went - boy and dog.
Two hours later Tom was home from work. “Hey babe, how was your day?”
Before she could answer he spotted Jack and puppy playing together.
“Where did that dog come from, and what’s he doing in my backyard?”
“Hi dad,” squealed Jack as he came running to him. “What do you think of Chase?”
“Who?”
“Chase! I named him Chase. Every dog has to have a name and since he loves chasing after my ball, I named him Chase. Cool, huh dad?”
“Laughing, Janet asked Tom to sit down, while she told the story.” Twenty minutes later she asked, “What do you think we should do?”
“Keep him,” blurted Jack.
“Let’s make up a flyer and put it around. If no one claims him, then maybe we have ourselves a dog,” replied Tom.
“Great idea,” said Janet.
Two weeks later, with no response to the flyer, Jack announced that “Chase had finally found his way home.”
“You know Jack, with ownership of a dog comes responsibility. You need to feed him morning and evening, brush his coat, take him on walks. Do you think you can manage all that?” Asked mom.
“Sure can. I’d do anything for Chase. He’s my best friend now.”
And that’s how this family of three became a family of four when a cute little black puppy with white paws came to live with them.
Chase wagged his tail in approval.
“Woof!” (Interpretation…Found my home).
