Simple things can stir profoundest thought;
Perceptive eyes behold an eloquent display,
New perspectives by our observations taught.
Have you ever watched a puppy chase its tail?—
It runs around in circles all in vain,
Flops exhausted from a quest that’s bound to fail,
Presupposed result it never can attain.
Should it catch its tail what benefit ensues?
It seems to me at best a useless gain—
It’s perhaps its way to keep itself amused
But its folly gets me thinking just the same.
Recall the things I chased in bygone days of youth
When I sought out futile shortcuts to the heights,
All the lessons learned in vanity’s pursuit,
The upshot of the chase for spurious delights.
Often what i sought was just beyond my grasp
I’d strive and strain but never realise;
When supposing I’d achieved my goal at last
Like a mist it disappeared before my eyes.
When I see the puppy stretched out, now at rest
It makes me smile within as I recall God’s grace
Forgave my futile efforts, all the things I’d messed,
By His Spirit I have given up the chase.
