So she was shocked when she showed up for work and her assignment editor came puffing around to her desk with a story from the wire that said, 'The Return of Blue Lightning?’
“Belinda,” he began in his smoky voice, “You’ve gotten some exclusives about Speedster. Contact her and see what she thinks about this blast from the past.”
Belinda took the article from him without coughing too much at his breath. She skimmed the article in a second and responded, “I’ll do what I can and try to get a quote for tonight’s broadcast.” What she actually thought was, 'I need to personally check on this woman who took dad’s old foe’s mantle.’
The editor moved on to someone else as Belinda left, ostensibly to talk to Speedster. The instant she left she pulled out her compressed Speedster costume from her purse and in a blur of motion Speedster appeared. From what the wire report said Blue Lightning wasn’t causing property damage to cover for some other crimes. Instead she was just causing random destruction for it’s own sake. She had already caused a tidal wave to flood Manhattan and had caused damage to cargo boats by creating whirlpools. Muttering to herself Speedster decided to go further east, presuming her new foe would attack Europe next.
Admittedly, Europe is a big place, but with her speed, Speedster could be anywhere, so when she arrived in Britain and heard a radio report about the destruction of the dams in Holland, she was there in an instant. Upon seeing Speedster, Blue Lightning ran away and Speedster remarked, “Not very chatty” A couple of minutes later, Speedster had used the debris to plug the holes on the dykes. Then to help churn out the water, Belinda ran on the blades of the windmills, causing them to spin faster and clear out the flood waters
In an instant, Speedster was in Paris where Blue Lightning had used her speed to wrap the Eiffel Tower in miles of cables, creating a magnet that was pulling cars and other metal objects. While not as bad as flooding Holland, Speedster knew she had to unravel that giant electromagnet. A minute later, the cable was stored neatly back on the ground and the cars were safely back on the road.
Speedster grabbed some food to fuel her continued chase. “Where is she going and why is she bent on destroying stuff?” She wondered into the wind of her own making. Slowing down to see a news broadcast of the Sphinx being buried, Speedster sighed and headed towards Egypt. Finally catching up to her azure enemy she asked, “Why are you doing this?”
To her surprise she heard her own voice taunting her. “Because I cam, and you can’t stop me.”
“We’ll see about that.” Belinda replied.
Knowing her own weaknesses, Speedster raced into a nearby city and commandeered a freezer truck. Pushing the truck to where Blue Lightning was burying the Sphinx, she pushed the truck directly in the other woman’s path. As her azure enemy was moving too fat she raced into the freezer truck.
Giving Blue Lightning a couple of minutes to feel the effects of the cold, Speedster carefully opened up the truck. To her surprise, Blue Lightning was collapsed on the floor. Belinda cautiously moved closer to unmask her foe. To Speedster’s shock, she saw a grotesque mirror of her own face, but incredibly aged. Blue Lightning said in a quavering voice, “You beat this clone, but the next one will have you chasing your own tail.” Then as if her last speech aged her further, she breathed her last.
“Clone, Hmmm?” Belinda mused. “How many more will I end up chasing around the globe?”
Back in America, Angela Jones, who in disguise had created Allah’s Fist, was also contemplating the death of Blue Lightning. “The cloning process worked out fine, but I need to chase down why the artificial aging went out of control. I’ll need to perfect the process if I’m going to defeat the Light Force.”
