It sounded like a smart (brain), but wild and crazy (maniac) individual.
The first and last time I can remember hearing the term was back in the mid 1980’s when I went to Community College pursuing an Associates Degree, to enhance my credentials in my law enforcement career.
Back then, to be a police officer, one had to graduate from the Police Academy, but a college degree was not required at the entry level.
Later on, when I did go to college, I graduated with Highest Honors.
This, I’m sure, would have come as a surprise to many of my high school teachers, as I was not one who was ever all that concerned with getting any more than a passing grade.
Having acquired more than a decade of experience prior to attending college, I had somewhat of an advantage over many of my fellow college classmates.
Most of them were either studying to enter law enforcement, or new-comers.
It was in this setting that someone from this younger group labeled me a b-r-a-i-n-i-a-c.
I took it as a compliment, but considered it a humorous overstatement.
Upon doing a little research for this article, I learned that Brainiac was an intelligent, but evil, fictional comic book character, in the DC Series.
Finally, the light came on!
Intelligent, but evil, is actually a fair description of the devil.
He is a very intelligent, but evil personality, often being the driving force behind unrestrained violence.
Scripture (1) identifies the devil as being our primary adversary, who seeks to destroy us.
He is a maniac, in the sense that only a crazy fool would think he could oppose God and win.
His eventual destination (2), along with the fallen angelic and human beings that he is able to deceive, has already been determined.
But in the meantime, to the extent that God allows, he continues to engage in spiritual combat with the eternal destiny of each individual soul hanging in the balance.
The devil is not (yet) in Hell, awaiting the arrival of all the ”bad” people.
He walks among us, and has a massive army of millions of spiritual warriors (3) at his disposal to achieve his objectives, here on Earth.
In addition to this massive army of evil spiritual beings, he has millions of human beings that he has deceived, that unwittingly go about promoting his agenda (4).
Here in the Church Age, the devil’s #1 objective is to impede the promotion of the unadulterated Gospel Message.
He does so by opposing the truth while promoting false religion and good deeds as the means of salvation.
If, when, and where, objective #1 fails, and the intended target is born again (5), then objective #2 comes into the picture.
Objective #2 is to impede the Mark 4: 20 productivity in the post salvation life of the born again believers.
“And those (born again believers who become disciples) are the ones sown with seed on the good soil; they hear the word and accept (believe) it and bear fruit (saved and edified souls), thirty, sixty, and one hundred times as much (Mark 4: 20 NASB2020 parentheses mine).”
The devil has mastered the art of spiritual combat. He has had thousands of years experience, interacting with members of the human race.
His method of operation is deception and distraction.
Apart from God (6), we are no match for the devil.
He deceives by promoting false religion as being the means to obtain, retain, or to regain salvation.
He distracts by using both prosperity and adversity, whichever one best suits the situation.
The devil knows which one of our buttons to press, and when to press them, for maximum effect.
Now, the good news!
If one has been born again, he or she has full access to the knowledge (7), and the power of God the Holy Spirit, who indwells (8) all born again believers.
With THIS knowledge, coupled with THIS power source, one can defend oneself against attacks from the devil and or his Eph. 6: 12 forces of evil.
With this same knowledge and enabling power, one can also go on the offensive and successfully engage in spiritual combat.
One must not only obtain this knowledge, but develop the wisdom and the courage to apply it (9) via the power to which one has been given access.
