Uriah let out an exasperated sigh as he answered his wife. “Yes, my dear, I must go to battle at this time. King David has ordered my going and, I don’t know why he isn’t going. Something about needing to stay back to take care of some business.”
Uriah kissed his wife on her cheek.
“I am going to miss you terribly,” Bathsheba whispered.
“As I will miss you, but I will be back before you know it. Come, give me a hug so I can remember your warm embrace while I'm on the battle field.” Bathsheba slipped into the waiting arms of Uriah and clung to him for dear life. Oh how she would miss this wonderful man.
After a night of weeping for herself and her husband, Bathsheba welcomed the morning with a new sense of purpose. She would stop her crying, and rejoice over the fact that God had blessed her with such a good man. She would pray extra hard for him while he was away, that God would keep him safe. With this new resolve in her heart, she went to the rooftop. She would bathe and relax in the afternoon sun.
Bathsheba summoned her slave girl, Natasha, to get her bath ready. When the bath was warm and perfumed oils poured in, Bathsheba quickly undressed and slipped into the warm bath.
“Thank you Natasha. That is all for now. I will summon you when I am ready to leave my bath.” With that Natasha bowed gently and left the room, allowing Bathsheba the luxury of her afternoon bath - alone.
“David, why didn’t you go to battle with your men. It's what kings are supposed to do,” asked his servant Azriel.
“Don’t bother me with your questions. I have my reasons for staying behind. Now go and leave me alone,” replied an apathetic David.
Feeling no interest in anything, David left his couch, where he had been reflecting, and began to walk around the roof of his house. As he rounded the corner, he abruptly stopped as he took in the sight of a beautiful angel bathing on the roof top across from him. He could tell she was beautiful. Desire in him arose and he wanted this angel more than anything. “Who is this beautiful angel?” David murmured to himself.
“AZRIEL! COME HERE.”
With haste, Azriel stood by David’s side, “Yes Master?”
“See that beautiful angel on the roof top? Go find out who she is and bring her to me,” ordered David.
Azriel, a man of God, knew what David was thinking and what he had in mind. Yet, as his servant, he did was he was commanded. But not without muttering to himself, “How could David even think about violating this young woman in this way.”
But Azriel was not king. David was. And what David wanted - David got.
At the second knock on the door, Natasha answered. The man standing there looked troubled.
“Greetings from the King,” stuttered Azriel. “I have been summoned to ask if Bathsheba would come with me. The King wishes to see her.”
Natasha quirked her eyebrow, then nodded and said, “I will get her. Wait here.”
Bathsheba was escorted into David’s chamber. He was handsome, that was certain. But she was married to Uriah, whom she loved dearly. It seemed that did not matter to David - the fact that she was married.
“Come, my love, lay with me,” coaxed David.
Not wanting to refuse the King, she did as he summoned. They lay together and made love.
Bathsheba could not enjoy this violation by the King. Her heart cried, “how could he do this to me? How could he do this to his warrior?”
When all was done, Bathsheba dressed and walked home with a heavy heart.
“How was your meeting with the King?” Natasha asked.
“I don’t want to talk about it. Leave me alone.” With that, she fled to her room and cried.
“He raped me,” she whispered to herself. “The King - raped me. What am I to tell my husband?”
We don’t know the rest-of-the-story in regards to Bathsheba but we do know with David. He wrote Psalm 51 asking for mercy and forgiveness. Was he also man enough to ask forgiveness from Bathsheba?
God saw her worth. Bathsheba is recorded in Matthew 1:6
