Being bored with boards is a potentially dangerous place to be in the spiritual realm. Boredom is evidenced by a diminished interest in God and or the things of God, often times accompanied by an increased desire for many of the distracting things that this world has to offer, to take His place (1).

Boards are among the building materials that provide structural integrity, walls, roofing, stairways, and privacy within structures.

Tangible boards (2) provided structural integrity for the mobile, Old Testament Tabernacle. Failure to pay attention to details when constructing, moving, and reconstructing the Tabernacle would have placed its structural integrity, purpose, and usefulness in jeopardy.

There are symbolic lessons here for Church Age believers, who are to build and maintain an edified soul structure (3).

The edified soul structure of an advancing disciple is built on the rock foundation of the unadulterated Gospel Message. The boards that are used to frame and complete the structure are accurate principles of Bible Doctrine.

Using the wrong materials (false doctrine) and or negligent construction and maintenance, sets the stage for Matt. 7: 27 collapses.

“The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell-and great was its fall (Matt. 27 NASB).”

There are boards of deacons, elders, and trustees who, among other things, are there to assist the pastor-teacher in maintaining the location where (or how) a local assembly gathers together for corporate worship (4).

In the case of a traditional local assembly, there is the need to have a place or a facility for the local congregation to physically gather together.
The tangible means of communication to facilitate a radio, Internet, or publishing ministry are different, but still must be purchased and maintained.

Backsliding believers become bored with God and or the things of God, beginning with a loss of appetite for spiritual food or activity.
As in the natural realm, the loss of appetite in the spiritual realm is an indication that something has gone wrong and the need for attention.

In the natural realm, eating disorders are in view when one develops a lifestyle of either over-eating or under-eating the quality and or quantity of food necessary to maintain good physical health.

In the spiritual realm, the under-eating an over-eating of the Word of God can impact the quality and or forward progress of an advancing disciple’s post salvation spiritual life.

Under-eating is the result of not taking in the accurate teaching and or reiteration of the Word of God on a regular and on-going basis.

The accuracy of the teaching determines its quality. The scope of the teaching determines its quantity.

One can attend worship services on a daily or weekly basis, but not be fed with the quality or the quantity of the Word of God necessary to continue advancing in discipleship.

One can be sufficiently fed the Word of God on a daily or weekly basis, but it will prove to be of no benefit if the food is not metabolized.

Evidence that spiritual food is being metabolized is in view when the information taken in, results in its application, as the disciple moves forward in the plan of God.

Over-eating takes place when the recipient takes in or is bombarded with more advanced doctrine that he or she can handle in light of his or her level of spiritual maturity at any given time.

A nutritious steak dinner will not be held down by an infant (5). Kindergarteners would not find a lecture on calculus beneficial. But advancing disciples need advanced doctrine.

Are you bored with God or with the things of God?

There are solutions.

The cause(s) for the diminished appetite and boredom in the spiritual realm can be detected by conducting an evaluation of the provider and 2Cor. 13: 5 self-examinations by the recipient.

Is the provider (my choice of pulpit) doing its job, providing me with the quality and the quantity of the teaching and its reiteration that I need to hear, or is it I who has been discouraged or distracted?

To rectify the situation, the cause(s) must then be addressed.

For an advancing disciple, acquiring the boards to build, to maintain, and then to make use of an edified soul structure, is anything but boring.
