Today they had asked their friend Belinda Snow, AKA the Speedster, to work with the kids. Belinda had babysat for them, and they trusted her completely. Belinda took the responsibility very seriously and promised Rex and Rebecca that she would not allow any harm to come to the fledgeling superheroes.
As soon as their parents drove away, the kids changed into their costumes. Belinda did likewise. She asked if they could fly like their parents, and got tentative answers. Despite some misgivings, she said aloud, “Okay, you two go out the back second floor window. I’ll meet you down the block in a minute.”
Loretta responded, “A minute? What’s going to take you so long?”
Belinda chuckled, “You’ll see when we finish up patrol. Now let's go Firebug and Cloudwalker.”
Suddenly Speedster got a call from the police on the earpiece in her cowl. Someone was robbing the Fifth National Bank. Stopping, she told the trainees that something serious had come up and to follow her. She didn’t say it aloud, but thought, ‘I could get there faster alone, but I promised to train them.’
When they arrived at the bank, they saw a chubby man wearing ill fitting army surplus camouflage. Speedster immediately noticed that the vault debris was inside, not outside as if the door had been torn open. Cloudwalker pushed his way past Speedster and proclaimed in a loud voice, “Okay, mister, come out with your hands up, or we can do this the hard way. Please choose the hard way. I can use the training!”
Firebug pulled her younger brother back behind Speedster and used her telepathic powers to admonish him. ‘We don’t know what he can do. Allow Speedster to take the lead.”
Cloudwalker responded with a raspberry, and Speedster wondered aloud, “What was that all about?”
Not waiting for an answer, the man pulled his strange-looking weapon at them and smirked, “Superheroes, now I can see how powerful this gun is.”
As he fired, Speedster moved her young charges out of the way, but instead of bullets or laser beams, there was an extremely loud noise, which blew out the door and flipped several parked cars. The robber shouted, “Loud enough for you?”
Speedster spoke quietly to the two youngsters. “Firebug, can you melt his gun? Cloudwalker can you hit him with a low wattage lightning bolt to stun him?”
She knew she was fast enough to easily disarm the man, but she wanted the kids to use their powers cooperatively to capture this villain.
Firebug looked nervously at Speedster. “I don’t know if I can control my flame powers that well. What if I burn his hand?”
Cloudwalker responded, “I think so.”
He pointed at the man and a small lightning bolt hit him in his ample gut.
The robber laughed. “That tickled, kid. The armor I have on from that crashed spaceship protects me from your powers.”
Firebug replied to the thief, “Who are you? What spaceship?”
He responded, “Call me Aloud. And a spaceship crashed in the woods where I was hunting. The pilot was killed, so I took his weapon and armor, and decided to get rich.”
Speedster decided to retake control of the situation. “Well, Aloud, you are aware that stealing is not allowed, and as superheroes, we are going to stop you.”
Aloud shot back, “Sure, you and the junior super friends are welcome to try.” He fired directly at Speedster’s head, stunning her.
Firebug shouted at her brother, “Aim for his hands. If he drops the gun, then I can melt it.”
Aloud turned to her and chuckled, “Great idea, little girl, announce your plan so I can defend against it.”
Turning toward Firebug, he shot her. Cloudwalker reacted loudly, “Leave my sister alone!” as he unleashed a full power lightning bolt at Aloud.
While the alien armor absorbed the lightning, the thunder clap rattled him enough to drop the gun. Cloudwalker blasted the gun into slag.
Speedster regained consciousness, bound Aloud with his belt, and turned him over to the police. Then she asked the kids, “Ready for some pizza?”
Their loud responses were nearly as deafening as the thunder.
