I am grateful the midterm elections are over. Watching the political ads showed me how far our world has fallen into an abyss of moral depravity. The world is heavily laced with anger, hate, and lies. Two weeks before the election, the candidates told us they were going to fix our nation. They never gave us a plan on how they were going to fix the problems our nation is facing. Just that they were going to fix them.

Then about ten days before the election the personal attacks began. Words such as snake, liar, thief were fired at one another like arrows flying through the air. It is difficult who to believe because of the attacks and counter attacks. My grand-daughter walked into the room and asked, “Who’s a snake PopPop?” She skipped out of the room before I could come up with an answer. I fear what she will have to listen to when it is time for her to vote.

We are bombarded throughout the day with so much negative material. News stories, social media, and TV. What was once considered wrong is now right and what is right is now wrong.These outlets are outside of us and we have a choice. We can turn the TV off and not go on social media.

Some of the most hurtful words come from our fellow citizens. If we are in opposition of a particular belief, we are called racists, bigots, or haters. People shout you down without even giving you a chance to express your thoughts. Today’s attitude is, “what you think is not important, or I am right and what I say matters.” The days of civil conversation are in our rear view mirror.

There are words that are more dangerous than what are said on TV and social media. Words more dangerous that are said by another human being. It’s those internal words we speak to ourselves? The ones buried in our heart; that if they are there long enough will eventually come flying out of our mouth and possibly turn into a regrettable action. They will do some damage to someone or some situation. Not only will they hurt someone else but they will come back and hurt us.

These words are the ones we use to describe who we are. Words such as “I’m not worthy. What a fool I am. How can I call myself a Christian?” Or when our emotions get the best of us. We get angry over what someone said to us and then get resentful. These arrows add up in our quiver. They have a boomerang effect. They come back and pierce our hearts. That piercing of our heart damages our relationship with Almighty God. If we ponder hurtful words long enough and don’t repent, they become the lens we view life through.

The words that are fired back and forth at each other has caused a great division in our country. A division no human power can bring back together. There may be small strides of progress but it will only be temporary.

As Christians our first act is to pray for our country and leaders. Read and meditate on the Word daily so as not to continue falling into the chasm our country has created. There are so many voices talking both inside and outside of us. There is only one voice we are to listen to that is the voice of the Lord. It is the voice of our Creator the Almighty God. We will recognize it because it is the truth. We have the Holy Spirit in us and he will guide us into all truth. Jn. 16:13 NKJV. We can enjoy the rhythm of life by listening to the words of Jesus. As believers let us remember the power in us is stronger than the power in the world.
