The cot she lay on was low to the ground and narrow, the kind that have crisscross wooden slats at each end. The rags she used as blankets were dragging in the dust. So much dust, it was thick like sand, every drop of water had gone to satisfy the insatiable thirst of Drought.
Rebekah's life had been sucked out leaving this tiny, shriveled human, important only to the flies buzzing around her face. If there were an award for Deepest Tragedy and Unspeakable Grief, no one could deny Rebekah the prize.
Cruelty had a deep sense of irony. Rebekah's children had washed away in the rains of a deadly hurricane, her husband had drowned trying to save them. How could water give life and then greedily steal it away. Surely I should pray fervently for her to be freed from this punishment and mercifully die. But did she know Jesus?
My turn had come, to minister to Rebekah face to face. We were here to give hope, my gloomy thoughts were not what she needed. With my strongest attempt at a genuine smile I knelt beside this pitiful bed.
“Good Morning dear one!” This voice was almost musical. Years ago on a visit to Switzerland I had noted that the French Swiss almost sing their 'bonjour'. Had this broken woman just greeted me with such a lovely sound? “What is your name, sweet girl?”
“I am Susan.”
“Susan, an instrument of God bringing his daughter water and love, God will reward you dear.”
“You know God?”
“Oh yes! And I hope you do too! But you must or you would not have come here. My Father sends family to meet me every time I am in need. What a joy to meet you my sister.”
The bottle of water trembled in my hand as I offered it to Rebekah. She drank slowly, her eyes closed. This face I had dreaded to look at now astounding me with the glowing spirit it radiated.
“You have blessed me sweet sister, now tell me how you met our Father.”
I had come to tell Rebekah about Jesus, but in a one drink of water she had filled the room with His Glory. What could I possibly say?
“Well, I have been a Christian for fifteen years. I learned of God at a Bible camp.”
“How did you come to know Him?” I asked.
“Susan, I met Jesus when my life here on earth all died in an hour of horror. It was Jesus who held me as I held the bodies of my dead children. I am sorry to talk to you of such sadness, but you must know that our Father steps into our agony to hold us. You must know He will never leave us. When you see me here in this bed you may think I have nothing. But here, in my unencumbered world He is my constant companion. In my horrible suffering I understood what our Lord had done for us. Do you understand?”
How could I answer such a question? I had suffered nothing in this life.
“Rebekah, I cannot say I understand how you radiate Jesus but I know that you do. I came thinking I could share Him with people who don't know Him. But in this short time you have shown me I hardly know Him.”
“Susan, God is in you or you would not be here dear one. I saw your crown as you handed me this bottle of water. As I drank, I prayed for you. I thanked God for this star He is adding to your crown.”
“I deserve no crown, my faith is nothing in comparison to yours!”
“Princess Susan, you must never compare such things! We are heiresses, my dear to the very same glorious promise. I will be so honored to share my castle with you!!”
We hugged, I cried in her emaciated arms, I knew I had never seen a more beautiful princess, nor tasted the promise of heaven more sweetly.
