A young women age 16
Glanced at the ultrasound
The technician smiled warmly
Look
See
They are holding hands
Tears cascaded down
Out of her eyes
Onto a paper pillowcase
The babies were born
And placed side by side
In the nursery
The young woman
With a now empty womb
And empty arms
Was wheeled out the double doors
With only a backpack on her lap
The taxi whisked her away
Into obscurity
I hope they can stay together
She prayed
Five years later a mother unpacked her dishes
In a new home
In a new town
Full of promise
While her daddy worked
Little Victoria
Played house
In a refrigerator box
With her tattered teddy bear
Named James
Within a block
Was a small church
As Victoria and her mother
Strolled by
A small boy
Pushed an empty swing
Talking softly
Want to go higher?
A young mother
Sat on a bench
Clutching her Bible
Concerned about her
Disconnected son
While other children
Laughed and played
Merrily on the merry-go-round
Imagine how awkward it was
When he would pull a red wagon
Exclaiming there was somebody
Sitting in it
Or take two donuts
Instead of just one
Before Sunday School
Victoria and her parents
Walked into the small church
On a bright and sunny Sunday
Victoria’s mother knocked on the door of the classroom
A young woman answered
And exposed
A room full of love and life
Except for the boy
sitting at a table alone
With two donuts
He sat coloring
As sunlight
Cascaded through
The stained glass windows
Giving him an angelic aura
He looked up
To see his mother
Welcoming the newcomers
Placed his crayon down
And walked across the room
Hi, my name is James
He said to Victoria
As she attempted to hide
Behind her mother
She’s very shy James
And she doesn’t want me to go
Her mother said
Well- does she like donuts?
I have an extra one
Victoria giggled
And peeked around her mom
What kind of donut?
Chocolate with sprinkles
That’s my favorite!
Mine too!
James and Victoria clasped hands
And walked to the table to sit down
Victoria’s mother was stupefied
Her daughter never would leave her side
Until now...
Victoria would always panic
Saying she didn’t want to be left
Alone
Again
Which made no sense
Until now...
As the two children colored
Pictures of Jesus
With their sticky fingers
Holding their crayons
The reunion was bathed
In a kaleidoscope
Of God’s love and light
A miracle had taken place
The two mothers marveled
As their minds embraced
The sweetest of realities
Victoria’s mom softly spoke
Victoria always says
Her name is too big
So she likes to be called Tory
The teacher smiled
As tears filled her eyes
James has always had
An imaginary friend
He has always insisted
And been outright obstinate
When he declares...
That His Tory is real!!
