There had been a knock at his door, and Seth crutched over to open it to find two official looking men standing in the doorway. “Come with us.”
“Why?” he questioned.
“We were just told to fetch you,” one of the men replied.
“What have I done?” Seth persisted. “Look fellas, I don’t know what you think I have or haven’t done, but I am not coming with you until I get some answers.”
The second man stepped forward. “Hey, I get it. We are just following orders. I tell you what, come with us and perhaps we can sort it all out with our boss.”
After some back and forth, Seth sighed and closed his front door. He knew he hadn’t done anything to capture the attention of the government, but he was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
After a bumpy journey, Seth and the two men pulled up in front of the palace. The palace? Why the palace?
Now Seth was second-guessing his decision to accompany the men but before he could say anything, they helped him down and into the main reception hall where a table, almost groaning with its load of fruits, vegetables, fish, lamb, grains and breads, took center stage.
Cautiously and slowly, trembling with trepidation, Seth stumbled along, crutches biting into his armpits. The man at the head of the table observed him carefully as he approached. “Don’t be frightened,” he said.
Seth couldn’t help it; he trembled all the more. “Sir?”
David stood and moved over to Seth. “Your father was my best friend. Your grandfather was my king. I want to do something special in memory of them both. All the lands that belonged to them will be deeded back to you. And I want you and your family to come and live with me… Hey, help me catch him!”
Seth soon recovered and David regaled him with tales of his and Jonathan’s exploits. “He was closer to me than a brother,” David whispered. “How can I not ensure his family is taken care of? I owe him everything.”
In the years that followed Seth and his son Mica were an integral part of David’s family, and dined at the king’s table every day.
David had been treated so badly by Mephibosheth’s grandfather, King Saul, and yet he repaid that hatred with kindness, love, dignity and yes, generosity.
