Like the yin and yang, a ball of light heroically stands in the centre of the darkness. That spinning pattern is the ultimate symbol of dualism: the day and the night swirling into one another; the complementary opposition of dark and light; the good and evil in every action. Humanity is caught in the crossfire of a great spiritual battle between two mighty yet equal armies. Good and evil spirits scrabble over us. They bicker and promise and condemn, manipulating us into fulfilling their divine plan. Yet they make no meaningful progress and remain stuck in this eternal battle.
Is that truly all that defines our world?
The fragile flame flickers on.
As if by some invisible force, the teardrop of light darts around in the shadows. It pauses for a few moments before bringing forth another larger tear, and then another, and another. The small chamber is cast in the warm glow of a company of candles, slowly breaking into the darkness.
Then you hear it: the bump in the night. A single candle tips, falling to the floor. Its small flame bites at a loose thread of a rug. Rapidly growing, it spreads wildly around the room, mindlessly destroying everything in its path. The frail curtains surrender to the raging fire and shrivel up to ash. Climbing the walls, the incandescent hoard lashes its whips at the rotten rafters, bringing the roof crashing down. Soon the entire house is filled with smoke and the walls crumble under the intense heat. The black of the night is expelled as the roaring flames outshine even the moon itself.
A single bump turned the slightest spark into a devouring dragon.
Yet, what if this is not an image of destruction, but a refiner’s fire? It burns away all that is old and dying, leaving room for the goodness in this world to grow. The roaring flames burn bright, victorious in their battle with the engulfing murk of our past.
A tiny cry echoes through the starry night in the small and insignificant town of Bethlehem. A small teardrop of warmth flickers throughout the darkness.
