What a dream job! I can imagine my friend’s excitement when a new box of samples arrives. First, she scrutinizes the label. Does the name stimulate the imagination? “Coconut-mango Delight” might bring visions of a tropical paradise. “Chocolate S’more Dream” evokes pleasant memories of summer campfires. “Banana Nut Bread” takes one back to a beloved Grandma’s kitchen. The name should describe, but also entice one to give it a try.
Next comes a visual examination of the plastic-wrapped orb. Is it a solid pastel shade, a two-tone, or a rainbow swirl? Does the color please the eye and tickle the taste buds?
Then comes the taste test. Is the flavor true to the description? Is it all that the label promises? Does the flavor explode from the first lick or merely caress the taste buds and beckon to continue? Is it fruity, creamy, tart, sweet, uniquely complex, or not up to par?
My friend records her own reactions and observations, then expands her market survey and shares her lollipops with family, friends, and strangers she meets. Her purpose is to make sure that every new flavor is a success. By the end of the trial she can answer the question, “Is it good?”
As a Christian, I’d like to share Jesus Christ with everyone I encounter. I don’t have a product to sell. Instead, I have a relationship to offer. It’s a relationship that can make the difference between darkness and light, freedom and bondage, or life and death.
He has an abundance of titles that describe him: Savior, Redeemer, Friend. He is Truth, the Light of the World, the Bread of Life, the Good Shepherd, the Rock of Salvation, God with Us. Such beautiful names! I testify to the truth of these titles. He is all these things to me, and more.
As a teen, I thought I could set my own standards and live by my own rules. It didn’t take me long to make a mess of things. I wandered about, angry at the suffering I saw in the world. I had an abundance of questions and no clear answers. I was hungry for something more than the confusion and emptiness I saw around me.
Then I found a church that offered me a taste of God’s written word. That weekly taste soon became a daily smorgasbord, as I devoured everything from Genesis through Revelation. All I had thought I knew before seemed like nothing now, in comparison with the truth I found as I studied. The Bible gave me a picture of the invisible God, in the person of Jesus Christ who lived a sinless life. For years I had been stumbling in a darkness of my own making; now a light shined to lead me to solid ground.
Hope and joy took hold as I came to understand God’s plan to redeem the world through Jesus’ death and resurrection. I put my trust in Him and my life has never been the same. I won’t say that life is simple, or easy, or free from pain. But I rest in the assurance that God has everything in control and that good will someday triumph over evil. His plan began at Creation, has continued through the ages, and extends into eternity.
Is it a good plan? Yes, it is. Is he a good God? Yes, he is. He is so, so good.
