“All done.” Those words floated gracefully through the air, riding on the kind tone of the carpenter’s voice, like honey to the ears.
“Thank you so much,” Jacob replied as his children chatted excitedly, climbing onto the wagon, “you’re a real lifesaver.”
Then they set off for the festival, Jacob’s daughters giggling about the boys they fancied, idly joyous and completely unaware of the significance of the man they had just left behind.
The screams of tortured agony rang out through the air, bringing chills to the spine. Blood oozed out the carpenter’s calloused hands as the rhythmic fall of the hammers drove spikes into his wrists, fastening him to a splintering plank of wood. Jacob stood, paralysed in disbelief as he recognised the bruised face being raised into the air. What had happened to him that he had become so hated by the chief priests: pious men and leaders within the society. How had a simple carpenter gained such recognition that whole crowds gathered to greet him as he entered the city. How had a man from Nazareth become so controversial that many of those same people turned against him, mocking, taunting, and spitting at him as he stumbled through the streets of Jerusalem just four days later? What crime could he have possibly committed and at what point had such dark intentions started to enter his mind. What had he missed about this mysterious man all those years ago?
Jacob felt a small, soft hand grip his finger. He looked down to see his youngest daughter, having followed him through the crowds in excitement, now squirming at the horrific sight that lay before her. He hurried her away from the gruesome scene and the jeering crowds. This was no way for God’s people to behave, laughing at an unspeakably cruel execution of hatred. What had they become?
The carpenter let out his final breath and let his head hang limp. The Earth mourned the death of its creator. The ground trembled in anguish and the sky donned her funeral veil. The angelic hosts waited on bated breath for the carpenter’s handiwork was approaching completion.
Centuries passed. Technology continued to improve and kingdoms rose and fell but human nature remained the same. An elderly woodworker bent over his table, dedicated to his craft. He chuckled to himself as he pondered the insanity of those who believed those fairy-tales of a carpenter from Nazareth performing miracles. He was thankful that the Emperor was so dedicated to protecting ordinary citizens like himself from such lunatics. What would the world be like if they had their way?
He heard cries in the street. There had been strange phenomena happening all over the world for a while but the Emperor assured them that was just down to climate change. This was… different. An iridescent glow filled the sky, a banner of colour flowing elegantly, joyously announcing the imminent arrival. The sky tore in two, and a blinding radiance filled the atmosphere. The sound of galloping horses thundered across the whole Earth. The carpenter had returned as a warrior king. His hammer had been replaced by a double-edged sword. His handiwork was nearing completion.
