It wasn’t always so. Lunia remembered being wrapped in a woolen shawl and sitting around the campfire. Enraptured by the voice of the storyteller, she listened to the message of the ancients passed down through the eons of time. The historic tales described a time when the land was bright and lush with fruitful trees and sparkling rivers, when the great Creator King walked with first ones in the Garden of Light. All was very good, until evil came to the perfect garden.
Ever since that day, death and darkness existed —just a tiny seed of doubt containing pride, and fear found root and began to grow. Greed and rebellion led to lies and hatred. Jealousies became bitterness, strife, and murder. An attitude of fear and confusion pervaded wherever the darkness reigned. Like a black mold, it spread and poisoned all that it touched.
Lunia's family often gathered with others of the Light. They sang praises to the Creator King and His Son, who provided an escape from the powers of the darkness. They treasured the gift of the Holy Indweller that shone through the followers with an eternal light. They rehearsed the promise of His return and life in a new Garden of Light. They invited others to their meetings of Light, but few joined them. Older ones, along with Lunia's parents, passed from this world of darkness into the Creator King’s world of light, The remaining ones missed their loved ones, but knew the separation was only temporary. One day they would join them in that wonderful place.
Lunia loved her group of Light followers, but it was dwindling. So many in the darkness couldn’t see the light; they didn’t even know it was there. Lunia knew that although living in the safe circle of the Light, it was selfish of her to keep its blessings to herself. She must go to those who needed it most. Saying "goodbye" to the others, she prepared for her journey. A sobering feeling gnawed in her stomach, that this quest may continue until she arrived at the end of her physical life and step into the realm of eternal light.
Lunia's travels brought her to the wide inky waters. The soft lapping of the waves gave her peace and comfort. She watched the sun's early disappearance into the dark ocean. The rhythmic washing of the sands sang to her all night as she slept.
Rising before sunrise later than usual, Lunia bundled her few possessions and continued her trek to the Sinister Forest. She hesitated at the edge of black trunks, like sentries guarding the way, their twisted branches reaching skeletal hands toward her. Whispering leaves quickened her pulse. Eerie flutters and rustling scurries alluded to unseen dangers, but Lunia continued step by step.
As the blackness closed around her, invisible roots and stones tripped her. Scrapes on her hands and face stung. She didn’t know where she was going and wondered if she'd made a big mistake. Instead of trusting the Indweller to guide her, doubts of her mission filled her heart. What good is one little light in this dark Sinister Forest? It would take ten thousand lights to make a difference. What good is one small spark against such evil?
Something swooped by her head, causing her to fall, trembling in terror. Her inner light dimmed, like a dying coal. Although she knew it would never leave her, its fading glow alarmed her more than her surroundings. “Oh, Lord of Light, help me! Don't leave me! Give me strength. Give me courage to go on.”
Her light’s glow grew and grew, pushing back the darkness and illuminating the path before her. She boldly walked deeper and deeper into the dark forest, singing songs of her childhood. Although many fierce enemies and demons watched her, she was unaware of them as she thought of her home in the Land of Light. She might have missed the young man standing by the side of the path if he hadn’t called out to her. “Miss? Miss? I’m lost. I have no light. Do you know the way?”
