Into my mind and heart,
And many took firm root inside,
Became of me a part.
I sowed seeds from my memories
Of early childhood days
And silly things I did and said
In my then childish ways.
I sowed seeds from my marriage years,
When to us God’s been gracious,
With thankfulness for love we have
And children that He gave us.
I sowed seeds from experience:
My happiness and sorrows,
My grief for loved ones gone too soon
With hope for our tomorrows.
I sowed seeds from the books I taught
Of prose and poetry.
Some works amused and some inspired
And some of them intrigued me.
I sowed seeds from what I’d observed
Of wonders in creation,
How awesome beauty that I saw
Would fill me with elation.
I sowed seeds from God’s holy Word
With words of inspiration,
Directing how to live for Him
And give Him adulation.
Though while I’d all these seeds inside,
I lacked a way to show it.
In seeking for a way to reap,
Thus I became a poet.

I avoid slanting rhyme mostly, but sometimes you need to sacrifice technical perfection in favour of the message.
Congratulations on your placing.
