Immediate assailants,
We fail to see the light
Forming rainbow spectrum
Promise sent heaven to earth—
Count its assurance.
Pressures of the moment
Overwhelm and bind us
While below in deep recesses,
Forces underfoot are making
Diamonds out of coal—
Weigh its worth.
Relentless pain finds us
Coming in threatening
Waves of dread and fear,
Yet a baby’s birth cry
Blots out the memory—
Value its meaning.
Dark doubts creep in,
Night-blinding canopies
When our souls grope for light,
The smallest faith-flame
Flickering to dispel the gloom—
Calculate its luminance.
Storm, strain, pressure, pain,
Doubt all come through
That door of sin we open
To find a chasm between us
And the One who made us—
Measure its effect.
Reckoning comes to mind
Hopeless life – forever death,
And then! He comes to us! Jesus!
Joy of heaven, Savior, King
God of grace, LORD of all—
Multiply His significance.
This sacrificial Lamb suffering
To atone all sin once for all,
And for what was set before Him
Gives us the same in this life,
Daily underlying mercies to count—
Total it—joy!
