“It was a perfect plan,” his underling breathed.
“It just made me sick to see how gregarious that one was as a little kid,” he pointed an accusing finger at one of the humans they watched. He mused on “I knew he was going to be trouble. All we needed was for Jesus to get into his heart.”
“Yeah, so you put your plans into motion.”
“I had to do something when his Momma got him to walk to that church for Sunday school every week. Oh how his singing got on my nerves.” The demon boss shivered.
“So we got that minister to leave and sent in the lukewarm guy, right boss? It was great.”
“That was really starting to work. A lot of people caught the lukewarm wave.” The boss smiled, remembering.
“Yeah, it was a real craze, boss, we were at the top of our game! Everybody at that church got so ho-hum. Their faith got boring, lazy and practically non-existent and they didn’t even notice it. Things were never better for us.”
“Then the troublesome little guy’s Daddy-O decided to move the whole family out into the middle of nowhere. That was great! While they moved into the woods, it looked like we were out- of- the- woods”.
“Very clever, boss!”
“You fool, we had nothing to do with that.”
“But, it meant no more being able to walk to church for him and no neighbors close by to invite the family to their church; it had to have been our plan, didn’t it boss? Because - what a shame - no more chances to learn about Jesus. It makes me so sad.” The underling elbowed his boss and laughed.
The boss glowered at his underling. “What is wrong with you? We didn’t win here. Think about what happened. It was a real disaster.”
“We never saw it coming.”
The boss’s accusing finger pointed at the other human they watched. “He showed up and ever after Momma called him a real friend.”
“Makes me sick.”
“He was a salesman.”
“They’re not friends. They’re supposed to have bad reputations,” the underling stated.
“He drove his milk truck up to the house and got out. That gregarious little guy ran out to meet him.”
“Hey, who are you and what did you bring?” the little guy asked in his annoying, inquisitive way.
“I have some good, healthy food to help you grow, is your Mom or Dad around?”
“I’m right here, Momma answered. “ Yes we are looking for a good milk carrier. Tell me about your company.”
“And he did, so what?”
The boss gave his underling a shrinking look. “Whatever possessed him…”
“Not us.”
“To ask her that last question?”
“Have you found a church to go to? If not, I know my church would welcome you and your family and teach you all about the love of Jesus.”
“Thank you,” Momma said. “I really appreciate that. I was concerned that we’d be lost out here but now I feel like I’ve made a good friend today. Thank you for caring.”
“No, no, no, that was not supposed to happen!” the boss moaned.
“That was forty years ago,” he continued. “Look at that little kid now. How many souls has he taken from us into that growing congregation of his? It makes me just about as sick as I can be.”
"Not quite, boss, listen to that awful sound.”
“Oh, no! Rev. Gregarious and his salesman friend are singing praises to Jesus again. We gotta get out of here.”
