This is sweet. There is something special about country folk. You did a nice job of capturing it in this charming tale.

Congratulations on your EC Noel. I enjoyed your story and its surprise ending. The locals ring-barked their 'towering trees' to help clear the land! Did they remain on friendly terms? (On reading other comments I've wondered if 'ring-barked' might be an Aussie term that most don't know. Googling it, I find that it is often called 'girdling' a tree. Non-Aussies, it means the new neighbours were killing the trees!Perhaps not what the newbies wanted.)
This is exceedingly well written, showing the anxiety about what might be and the delightful reality of what was, while revealing the true heart of country people. Great job, and congratulations on placement!
