“Dr. Evans please call front desk. Dr. Evans please call front desk please.”
The phone slipped and crashed to the ground. Retrieving it quickly I responded to the page, “Yes, this is Dr. Evans.”
“You’re needed in Mrs. Peterson’s room, she’s non-compliant with her meds and is creating havoc with the staff—”
“On my way.”
My gurgling stomach scolded me trying to garner attention pleading “feed me and relax…” I looked at the red door for room number 13, pausing before knocking.
“Go away!”
“Mrs. Peterson it’s Dr. Evans…”
“Oh! Come in. Just you and no one else,” the demand was solid.
“Yes, just me. I promise.”
“Then, come in.”
I listened to her complaints, one by one, some valid, others a means of loneliness, along with a sheer desire for companionship and sympathy.
“I will address this with the staff Mrs. Peterson. But, you have to do your part as well. Okay?”
“I suppose. But, they’re mean at times.”
“I will speak with them all, again.” I held her hand and smiled as she grinned. It was obvious she was a beauty in her younger days. She spoke often about her title and duties when she was Miss America.
“Thank you Dr. Evans. You’re a peach.”
“So are you!”
My stomach was getting louder by the minute and I needed to feed it before it disturbed everyone within ten feet of me.
I decided to head out to my car for some peace and clarity of vision. In the lull of my car that was parked beneath a shady Oak, I pulled out the best food for my needs. Opening to my favorite Psalm, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.”
I read it over and over…and closed with Matthew 11:28 in Jesus’ words ... all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Yes, this was the best part of my day being fed by His word and resting in Him.
By the time I finished, I was replenished and ready for round two. I closed the car door and walked with a renewed spring in my step, ready for another round at the nursing home...Problems were easily overcome with my weapons of fortune.
