Theresa put her book down and sighed. “Tessa, what was our agreement?”
Tessa looked apologetic. “I know, Grandma. You said if I let you study until 3 o’clock, we’d make cookies. But that’s another hour, and I’ve got nothing to dooooooo.”
“Tessa, don’t whine.”
“Sorry, Grandma. But I am bored. I’ve done my homework, read both my books, and played games on my phone until I had to charge it.”
“Did you …”
“Yes, I washed the dishes. I even cleaned my room.”
“Wow, you must be bored.”
“Told you.” Tessa looked longingly at the window. “If I’d known the street fair would get rained out, I’d have packed more books for the weekend.”
“Well, you did have to pack in a hurry when your Mom got the call to work out of town this weekend. Have you checked my bookshelves?”
Tessa looked disparagingly at the books stacked neatly behind her grandmother. “C’mon, Grandma. You don’t have anything interesting to read. The only things there are a zillion versions of the Bible, and Bible commentaries.”
“Well, after all, I am a Bible history professor. Look, Tessa: I really have to finish preparing this lesson. Would it really hurt you to read the Bible for an hour?”
Tessa’s eyeroll was epic. “C’mon, Grandma. The Bible is just so boring!”
“Boring? You think what I teach about is boring?”
“Oh, Grandma, you know I love you, but yes. It’s way boring. I mean: all those “Thees” and “Thous”; all those “Thou shalt not”s. I think I’d even rather do more dishes.”
“I’ll remember that after dinner.”
“Ha ha, Grandma.” Tessa sighed. “Well, look: don’t you have some other books? Books that might interest a girl my age?”
“Sorry, Tessa. All my fiction books went with your mother when she left for college. They’re probably at your house.”
“I’ve read all those old books. They were great, but even if I wanted to read them again, they’re not here.”
“Well, Tessa, I’m sorry. I’ve got to get this lesson done, so I really do need another hour.”
Tessa sighed, “OK, I guess I can play phone games again. But I sure wish you had something interesting to read.”
Theresa paused a moment, and then smiled. “Well, I do have a book here with some interesting stories.”
Tessa’s eyes lit up. “Like what?”
“Well, how about a man who wanted to hear a famous teacher so badly, he had his friends lower him on a stretcher through a ceiling window.”
“I guess that sounds OK. What other stories does the book have?”
“How about a woman who risked her life to talk to a King; in order to save the lives of her people?”
“That sounds even better. Any others?”
“How about a young man sold into slavery by his brothers; who goes on to later save those brothers’ lives? There’s also a story about a man saw the sun stand still for a whole day; and another about a boy not much older than you; who fought a giant who had killed trained soldiers?”
“Wait a minute, Grandma. Even I know that last one - that’s David and Goliath!”
“So?”
“So that’s from the Bible!”
“Yes, it is. But so are those other stories.”
“No way!”
“Way! Tessa, c’mon. Admit it. You found those story descriptions interesting, didn’t you?”
“Yeah, OK. I guess so. Well, it’s only an hour. I guess I could try one of them.”
Theresa stood and took a modern translation of the Bible from one of the shelves behind her. She opened it, marked a page with a bookmark and handed it to Tessa. “Here,” she said. “Start with the Book of Esther. If you have any questions, I’ll be ready to answer them while we’re making the cookies.”
Tessa gingerly opened the Book, and backed out of the room. “I should have known you’d trick me into reading the Bible,” she grumbled.
But by the time Theresa came out to tell her the hour was over, Tessa was still bent intensely over the Book.
