Topic: AGREE TO DISAGREE (05/04/17)

The congregation of our new church home welcomes us with firm handshakes and warm embraces.

“You for Alabama or Auburn?”

Unlike most members of Goodwater Baptist, neither my husband nor I are sports enthusiasts. Chuckling, we’re both non-committal.

Location, location, location…

The small town of Goodwater, Alabama is located in no man’s land. In the eyes of a football fanatic, no man (woman or child) can straddle the fence of commitment. As the football flies, man’s calculated distance to the College of Alabama is approximately 60 miles. If driving in the opposite direction, you’ll arrive at Auburn University in less than an hour.

I’m a Baby Boomer circa Beach Boys Rock & Roll. With perfect harmony, they led the cheers with ‘Be True to Your School.’ Goodwater takes that melodious directive to heart.

Not only is the makeup of church members divided by football, homes are split along lines of sports competition as well. In many cases, Alabama husbands and wives support opposing teams. Calling a temporary truce, they agree to disagree.

Yet, there is one issue that all Alabama football fans agree on; they hate LSU or Ole Miss to win.

Memorabilia manufacturers make a killing in the State of Alabama. Auburn Tiger fans buy the latest in clothes, flags, license plates and logo magnets for vehicles. Not to be outdone, supporters of Alabama Crimson Tide purchase any like items of interest.

Rivalry is fierce and is at its highest when the two teams compete in the yearly Iron Bowl.

Disagreements over football teams pale in significance to political debate and confrontations. The adage rings true, opposites attract.

How else can you explain the marital union of James Carville and Mary Matalin?

Great fit for the topic! Maybe one day, FW will add audio to our entries so the school fight songs could be playing in the background, and not just in my head, as I read. In my younger years, I was an avid sports fan so relate to your characters on both sides of the gridiron. Thanks for a cool entry!
