Making things more complicated,
Cumbersome and gritty
Was a special talent bred in
Religious-os-ity.

“Every jot and tittle matters,”
The Jewish leaders said;
Smallest details were enforced by
Legalistic eggheads.

Regal and exacting details
Were thorough and precise,
Necessary for appearance,
They covered inner vice.

Making mountains out of molehills,
These zealots obeyed rules;
Critical of imperfections,
Sanctimonious fools.

Highly selective, excessive,
Unrealistic rules;
Coveting public attention,
Untouched by ridicule.

Flashing tassels hemmed their garments,
Righteously proclaiming
Pharisaical nonsense for
Recognized acclaiming.

Stringent standards of holiness,
Microscopic line guides
Strictly dealt with the external,
Disregarding insides.

Ostentatious and foreboding,
Scrupulous and frigid,
Pharisees fighting over rules
Sadducees thought rigid.

Perfectioned triviality
Was their daily duty,
Nitpicking their favorite pastime,
They soon became snooty.

Legalist experts of the law,
Exuding traditions,
Misleading the common masses,
From God’s mercy mission.

Tapping ritual purity
In oft repeated prayers,
Conspicuous in piety
Their chants flew through the air.

Fastidious and pretentious,
Stuck in the finical,
The self-righteous Jewish leaders
On self-made pinnacles.

Prideful and filled with vanity,
They missed the grace-filled truth.
How often do we do the same
Misjudging and aloof?

Consumed with temporal specifics
Of small worthless routines;
Forgetting our priorities,
To Him, Who is unseen.
