He left this world before his time—”
The minister in mournful tone
Bewails the death of one well known—
“Why should one die while in their prime?”
The mourners sob, I feel their loss,
(The curse of death that severs ties)
This separation none can cross
Which practiced solemn words can’t gloss,
Finality of life’s demise.
So many came to pay respects,
All, sympathetic and sincere;
Does death’s reality affect
Their deepest soul?—they might be next
In line for an untimely bier.
Is this the end? Dull monotone
In unconvincing mode suggests
The dead are in some pain-free zone
Of hallowed bliss—the hapless drone
Does not requite death’s endlessness.
“From dust to dust”, the words float by;
The ritual is done at last,
In muffled tone, through misty eye
A final, wistful, sad goodbye—
They file away, sombrely downcast.
If men would trust what Jesus says
The grave and death would hold no fear;
At the end of our appointed days
Because He lives we will be raised—
Our hope is not some vain veneer.
