“Oh love,” I thought out loud, as we were climbing into bed,
“You may have left your run a little late,” I offered next,
But managed to refrain from showing that I felt perplexed.
“I’m sorry, Hun, I’ve had a very hectic, crazy week.
What special thing will make your day?” he asked, and kissed my cheek.
“Well, what if you care for the girls when they wake in the morning?
I sure could use a sleep in,” I replied, as I was yawning.
“Done deal,” I heard him promise, as my eyelids fluttered closed,
I think, perhaps, the offer to make breakfast was proposed.
By then, my tired body had succumbed to restful sleep;
With kids aged two and five there’s never need for counting sheep.
A short eight hours on, the day had dawned, the sun was rising,
The fact that hubby was still fast asleep was unsurprising.
I tried my best to prod him gently from his manly snoring,
Our two-year-old, from in her cot, was urgently imploring —
“Mama! I get up now peaz,” and then, (as if on cue)
“Mama, I get up now peaz, my nappy has a poo!”
“Honey, Tegan’s calling out,” I tried, with one last nudge,
But so much like a log was he, he didn’t even budge.
“FINE!” I hooted angrily and threw off sheet and blanket,
Stomped down the hall, dealt with the stink, but felt a little thankless.
“Is one day’s rest too much to ask?” I mumbled and I grumbled,
I felt so peeved my Mother’s Day request of sleep had crumbled.
Just then, my other daughter skipped and bounced into the room.
“Happy Mother’s Day!” she squealed, her joy breaking my gloom.
She shoved forward a small package from behind her back to me,
“I got you the same mug again, so now you will have three!”
My Josie was so hopeful as she looked for my delight,
I said I couldn’t wait to use her gift, and squeezed her tight.
At last, the heavy shuffles of my sleepy man drew near.
“Why you up?” he asked, “You should’ve woken me, my dear.”
“If only I could sleep like you,” I smiled and shook my head.
“The girls and I will go whip up your pancakes now instead.”
“That sounds nice,” I acquiesced and grabbed my book to read.
I promised that, no matter what, I wouldn’t intercede.
I think about two hours passed, but Tom exhaustedly
Announced “Breakfast is made at last!” and smiled triumphantly.
Sadly, after all that time, we only ate one bit,
The kids screamed “Yuck!”, their father balked, I thought I might be sick.
It seemed the budding chefs had used the salt instead of sugar,
Which made our gourmet meal taste somewhat like a crusty booger.
“Let’s try the local café,” Tom relented in defeat,
“The walk will do us good, it’s just a stone’s throw down the street.”
All dressed now in our Sunday best, for church, after we’d eaten,
We joined the gathering of sheepish dads who’d all been beaten.
Our tummies finally full, then it was time to trundle back,
But once outside, we saw with dread, the blue sky had turned black.
“Oh boy, I think we might get drenched! Come on, let’s all get going!”
But within seconds thunder rolled and howling winds were blowing.
Freezing drops of rain came next and soaked us to the core,
“That’s it!” I cried, embittered, “I can’t take this anymore!”
I’d frightened darling Tegan with my cranky words of hurt,
As we held hands, she stumbled and we both crashed to the dirt.
I had a muddy tantrum with my toddler in the drizzle,
And asked “Why should MY special Mother’s Day be such a fizzle?”
I heard a kind voice, crystal clear, say “Child, those girls are mine,
To be their mum is a daily gift for you — rain, hail or shine.
I know today has failed to take the shape you thought it might,
Let’s take your thorn of selfishness away and finish right.”
“Oh, Lord, it’s true, I’ve strayed, will you forgive me for this muddle?
My gorgeous girls, my Tom, I think we need a family cuddle!”
So down there, in the mud, we all embraced and loved each other,
Perfectly imperfect still, but a family recovered.
