Diver just nodded his head. He didn’t want to disobey his father, but he didn’t want to do what he was commanding him to do either. He didn’t want to complete his training because he knew what he was in for when he did.
“Son, you wait for the shot to ring out, and then you dash into the water and retrieve it. What is it that you do not understand?”
“I don’t know father.” Diver hung his head in shame. He sensed his father’s frustration and knew he was starting to lose patience with him.
“Diver, here comes our master. Now watch and learn. This may be your last chance.”
Diver watched the tall figure come into closer view. His red plaid jacket was the first thing he noticed, then the black boots. But especially, he noted the rifle he was holding in his left hand.
Diver sat near his father while conflicting thoughts muddled fervently through his mind. “Why do I have to do this? Why was I born to do this? Is this what I really was created for? They’re my friends. I know they’re supposed to be the enemy…but I don’t feel like they are. I’ve played with Jake last week while his mother and father were looking for food. I've kept him company and we had a great time playing in the water. I don’t want to do this.”
Diver shivered overwhelmingly as he stared at the rifle being lifted into the air. The large man in red plaid with black boots took aim. He closed his eyes and hoped for the best, “Please, oh please…miss your target. Please miss…”
As the shot reverberated toward its intended target, Diver’s father jumped into the lake seeking the prize for his master. Diver’s eyes misted over with tears as he whimpered, “Please, Jake…forgive them…I’m so sorry.”
Diver looked again and immediately his tail wagged in rapid circles of joy! His father came from the lake without Jake! Could it be? Did he miss?
His father came to where Diver stood. After a quick shake-off of cold muddy water, he heard the master’s voice. “It’s okay…we’ll get him next time. We didn’t finish the job today, but we’ll definitely finish it tomorrow.” He petted his father on the head and walked off.
Diver’s joy was overshadowed by his father’s loss of reward. “Father?
Are you okay?”
“Yes son, I am.”
“Are you upset that you couldn’t please your master? I know that's your job, but…”
“To tell you the truth son—it’s not easy doing this job of ours—but, it’s what we’re bred for. As a golden retriever it’s what we do best. I’m happy your friend Jake is okay...for now. But, next time might be different. So keep that in mind okay?”
“Yes I will.”
His father turned to walk home.
“Father?”
“Yes son?”
“Do you mind if I stay behind for a little while?”
“Okay…go and play with Jake. I’ll see you back home.”
“Thank you father! I’ll see you later…” Diver’s golden body ran away quickly in search of his friend.
As his father walked home, he remembered his young childhood friend, a little duck named Jackson that wasn’t as fortunate as Jake…
