Seth Norval – twenty-eight years old, recently arrived from nearby Ashville to take over the local gym; built like a Greek god and the object of every girl’s dreams. Often the minutes Emily spent on the exercise bike sped by unnoticed as she dreamed of what it would be like if she had Seth to herself – spending time rowing on the lake, walking in the forests, or just sitting watching the sunset while …
“You nearly finished on the bike, Emily?” The voice behind her was Belinda Beaumont, local fitness champion and runner up in the Miss North Carolina pageant the previous year.
“Yeah, sure thing, Belinda – guess I’m done for the day. Must go weigh myself; see if my hard work has paid off.” With that she headed for the ladies room and climbed onto the scale. “Please Lord, let it be better than last time.” Too scared to look, she gave a quick glance – one hundred and sixty-five pounds - two up on last week. Totally demoralized, she headed back to the exercise room to push her tired body to yet greater efforts.
From her position on the stomach crunch machine Emily watched as Belinda flitted over to where Seth had just given a Pilates class. The banter between them was obviously exciting, and Belinda giggled coyly as she tossed her long black hair carelessly over her shoulder. “Can’t blame him,” Emily sighed. “She’s probably the cutest girl for miles around, and they sure look good together.” With much less fervor now, she closed her eyes and started her last set of crunches.
“Belinda tells me your play a mean banjo.” Emily opened her eyes and looked up to see Seth standing over her. “I sure need a good banjo player in my group. We’re practicing for the White Squirrel Festival – my group and I, but we don’t have a banjo player. Is it at all possible that you try out with us?”
Emily sat up and blinked twice. “Yeah, sure Seth – are you sure you want me, though?”
“Well, Belinda says she’s heard you playing both solo and in a group, and she says you’re really hot. It would be great if you could join us for the whole Festival. No pressure now, you’re probably already fully booked.”
“No, I’m available. Sure I’d like to try out with you.”
“Tonight at seven suit you? We’ll be meeting in Harvey’s barn – but I’ll call for you at your home, and take you back afterwards. That okay with you?”
Emily felt as though she was in a dream as she showered and changed. She was brushing her hair when Belinda’s face appeared behind her in the mirror. Belinda tossed her hair back, then gave a wink.
“He’s been asking about you for days now. He says that out of all the girls in the gym, you’re the only one that he was nervous about approaching. He kind of holds you in awe, like a princess in an ivory tower. The poor guy needed a good reason to chat to you, and so I told him about your banjo playing – hope you don’t mind.”
“Seth nervous to approach me – I can’t believe it, why on earth?”
“Can’t say. I tried hard to get his attention – probably too hard,” Belinda confessed, a look of resignation on her pretty face. He looks like a player, but he’s not. He’s looking for a sincere relationship. You got him hooked where many have failed, but from what I know of him, you’re just right for him. Good luck, girl, treat him nice”.
Emily gathered her bags, and headed for the door, passing her old enemy, the scale, on the way. For a moment she stopped, then with a smile and a spring in her step, she skipped happily out of the gym.
