was saddened by stark poverty,
Shelters were shacks and abandoned cars
while steady work, not their reality
The beggar boy had been coached
“Four quarters for one dollar,“ he asked
But he betrayed ‘cause in the exchange
Each time one coin was held back
Youth targeted generous hearts
their stomachs were unsatisfied,
Children working, though preschool age
selling beaded strings their sisters had tied
I knew my country was blessed with much
but we’re occupied with selfish goals
Motivated by careers, egos and wealth,
greed is rotting these self-driven souls
We need to share all that we have
with those who need it more
From our abundance, give to those who lack
Paying it forward may even some scores
We don’t need to visit foreign lands
to open our hearts to the poor,
There’s needs in every city and town
sometimes even that person next door
Hebrews: 13:16 Don’t forget to do good and to share what you have with those in need, for such sacrifices are very pleasing to God. (NLT)
