“Don’t blame me, Jethro. Billy-Boy is the one who persuaded Mathilda to steal DVDs from the store. It was you who couldn’t keep your charge in check; so don’t blame me that things have gone all haywire. Do you see what’s happening now?”
The two angels peered down from their heavenly vantage point. “I can see Billy-Boy and Mathilda tucked up in a motel room removing the store labels from their stolen DVDs,” sighed Jerome. “I don’t classify that as righteous progress. They probably plan on flogging them at half-price. You’re Billy-Boy’s minder, what are you going to do about it?”
“Watch this, and learn from an expert. Maybe one day you’ll also be able to pull heavenly strings like a maestro.” Jethro waved his arms around and suddenly the phone in the motel room rang. Billy-Boy jumped up to answer it and was soon engrossed in an animated conversation. “Now watch this,” said Jethro, “and learn from a senior angel.”
“Senior angel? Next joke.”
“Who was on the phone?” demanded Mathilda.
“My big brother Robbie – he’s a cop. The theft was reported, but he says I mustn’t worry; he’ll sort things out. He’s on his way to ‘legitimize’ our little operation.”
Jerome stared at Jethro in horror. “Is this your idea of making things right? I suppose Robbie is also one of your charges. You can’t carry on like this – after all, you’re a guardian angel; or rather, you’re supposed to be one.”
“Exactly; and by definition I must teach, mentor, guide, and nurture my charge, which is what I’m doing. And, because you’re such a good friend, I’ll even help you with your charge.”
“I can’t see that happening in a hurry.” By now Jerome was reaching exasperation point. “I’m pulling Mathilda out of there before she comes to any more harm.”
“Hang on, give me five more minutes,” Jethro was now sitting on the edge of the cloud. “It’s all coming to a head.”
The two angels watched as the police arrived, and marching up to the room where Billy-Boy and Mathilda were hiding out, banged loudly on the door. “Open up – police!”
“No need to make such a noise,” said Billy-Boy, opening the door. “Come on …” He stopped halfway through his sentence. “Where’s Robbie? Robbie said he’d be coming.”
“Lieutenant James got held up at the precinct house – I’m Sergeant Kowalski. We were told to come and investigate some stolen property. Now what have we here? Who’s DVDs are these and what are you two doing with them?”
“See, I told you it would work out,” said Jethro triumphantly. “You just need a little faith in an experienced angel like me.”
“Experienced, my foot,” screeched Jerome in anger. “Now Mathilda is going to get arrested when it’s all Billy-Boy’s fault.”
“Patience, fellow angel, just sit back and watch.”
Sergeant Kowalski removed a set of handcuffs from his belt and advanced on Billy-Boy. “You’re under arrest for stealing these DVDs, young man, now put your hands behind your back.” Then turning to Mathilda he said: “And you’re coming with me to the precinct house, Miss; your father is waiting to take you home. We’ve seen the security videos from the store, and you were not involved in the crime.”
Jerome was astounded. “But Mathilda actually took the DVDs, what happened to the video tapes?”
“Angelic manipulation,” said Jethro, with a superior smile. “Everything is working out just fine.”
“Oh yeah?”
Back at the precinct house Mathilda was handed over to her father, with the warning that she should be more careful about the friends she chooses, while Billy-Boy was taken to Lieutenant Robbie James’ office.
“You’re in luck, little Bro,” Lieutenant James said in a serious tone. “Mr. Wilson, the store owner, says that if you both spend the next six weekends in his store cleaning and sorting things out, he won’t press charges. Is it a deal?”
“Yeah, sure – thank you, thank you.” Billy Boy was amazed and relieved. “I’ll never do anything stupid like that again. Guess I must have some super angel looking after me.”
“One that kept you out of the slammer – for now.”
“Forever, big Bro, I’ll never try that again.”
Jethro sat back and rested his head in his hands. “See, they both learned a lesson, and no harm was done.”
“You were just lucky.”
“Yeah, whatever.”
