Waiting

The merchant strained his eyes and watched the ship sail from the shore
She slipped beyond horizon’s line and he could see no more.
Long months would pass before he’d see her heavy-laden form
Return with flowing cargo from far shores distant, warm.
Oh how he waited, waited, with eager searching eyes,
Waited for her arrival, he waited for his prize.
But days turned into weeks and months, the months turned into years,
His searching eyes fell downcast, with sorrow’s saddened tears.
Had his loved ship been lost at sea, oh did it never reach
The distant shore, the intended land, the destination beach?
He very nearly lost his hope, but just one thing he knew
The Captain of the vessel would surely see her through.
And then there came one joyful day, upon an evening tide
A spot on the horizon expanded, broadened wide,
The ship and cargo came to view, the long long journey past
The merchant sank to knees in thanks, his prayer answered at last.

And sometimes, longing heart, it seems prayers though persistent be
Are a long time in coming home, just like that ship at sea.
But I dare to believe this wonder, God hears my every call
And He will answer, in His time, whatever else befall.
Sometimes He answers quickly, sometimes before I ask,
Sometimes in unexpected ways as I go about day’s task.
But as I bow my knees in prayer, I learn my God is kind
And His clocks are set to perfect - always, always, on time
