In sheer panic I spun the steering wheel as hard as I could.
Smash!
My front wheels bounced over the curb. Airborne, I slammed into the automatic teller face on. That thing was a fortress designed to repel all borders.
The front of my car crumpled like paper mache. The bonnet flew up and blocked all vision. The windscreen shattered into a millions pieces. The air bag went off and my face hit the new wall in front of me. I broke my nose and passed out.
As I started to come to I was half aware of people talking. I couldn’t move my hands and it took me awhile to realize I was in handcuffs.
The policeman’s face swam in and out of focus like a goldfish in a round bowl. Someone else was there too. Only this one was shining a light in my eyes.
“He’s okay. No need for him to go to hospital. You can take him straight to jail.”
Jail! Another mighty fortress. Only this one didn’t repel borders, it took them captive and threw away the key.
“Did anyone see the pram?” I heard myself whisper as I tried to scream.
“Pram? What pram?”
“I swerved to avoid killing the baby.”
“A likely story, my lad. Watch your head.” The officer put me in the back of his squad car.
Fully awake now I looked around and was suddenly terrified. I was surrounded by a cage. A metal frame was between me and the front seat. There was more metal behind me and mesh covered all the windows. They thought I had rammed that teller machine in an attempt to steal the money it contained.
“Help! Officer, please, let me explain!”
I looked out the window and saw the cop talking to the medics. He wasn’t listening to me and had no intention of doing so.
“Lord, please help me. You know this isn’t the way it was. Someone must have seen the pram. Father I really need your help here.”
Out of the corner of my eye I suddenly saw it coming into view -- the pram. It was being pushed by an obviously shaken and frightened young lady.
She went straight up to the arresting officer and started animatedly pointing in my direction. He looked my way with a puzzled expression.
“Thank You, Daddy. You are my fortress and protection. Once again You are the strong tower that keeps me safe.”
The girls name was Susan. She turned out to be my age and was pushing a pram that contained her niece.
Twelve months later yet another mighty fortress was commissioned in Christ. At the altar of our home church, we exchanged our vows and promised to be each other’s shield.
We often joke about how we met by accident.
