“Did not!”
“Did too!”
Her eyes gleamed fiercely at her friend, whose eyes returned the heated glare.
“You always want what’s really mine. Let go!”
“No! YOU let go! Gimme!”
Tugs, pulls, back and forth, the poor brown thing strained in between. Grim lips, bared teeth.
Sudden cunning, slackened hold. False smile, intended to beguile.
“I tell you what. Let me have it for a while. Then you can hold it later on. Okay?”
Long, suspicious narrowed gaze. Pause for thought. Decision made, with shaking head. Deceit for naught. Hold tightened again.
“No! I know you. You won’t let me have it, once it’s yours. I want it, need it NOW!
GIVE. IT. TO. ME. You, you , you…greedy thief!”
“Don’t you dare call me a thief! You still have the sweater I loaned you last year.”
“…and you still have one of my favorite dvds. Thief!”
Fiercer tugging, gripping holds. Four eyes now awash with tears. Brown seams straining. Voices raised almost in howls.
Embarrassed people stop and stare. Combatants struggle, they don’t care.
A large, strong hand reaches in between and snatches brown thing from grasping fingers.
“Stop it! You two should be ashamed. No, I don’t care who is to blame. This kind of thing is not allowed in here. I may have to ask you both to leave.”
Now gentle hands check for torn seams, stroke the leather. It still gleams. He frowns at a tiny mark.
“Ladies, there is only one bag -at least in brown. Who wants it in red?”
Affronted, they stop and glare at him. United in umbrage, they turn to go.
“How dare he!” they say, whispering now. “That handbag wasn’t that great, anyhow. Come on. Let's try another store.”
