An opponent most astute
A most obnoxious irritator
This wretched pest’s the instigator
Of Australia’s salute.
At barbeques with glee perverted
This exasperating pest
Through stealth and craft and guile perfected
Flies like a missile undetected
To the plate of every guest.
This buzzing menace, ace taste tester
Hassles, harries and vexates
Delights to see his sorties pester
To see men’s ire and anger fester
As he swoops down on their plates.
He’s never known for being selective
All and sundry are fair game
Likes faces, lips, and foods defective
They’re all alike from his perspective
The clean and dirty’s all the same.
The gentlemen, their arms a-flailing
And lovely ladies losing poise
Are all in unison assailing
But yet the irksome pest’s prevailing
Despite the action and the noise.
To the observer quite amusing
All this boxing with the air
Though it might seem the fly is losing,
Appears to take a fearful bruising—
Perhaps you think the fight’s unfair?
Don’t dare to entertain the notion
Sympathising with the pest
For he, in spite of the commotion
And all the flailing arms in motion
Is not vanquished or suppressed.
As we’re engaged in constant combat
From the cradle to the grave;
In this dry land of ‘roo and wombat
It’s not a foible to be frowned at—
Our propensity to wave.

"And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."
