Quiddity was tempered quite timely with a rose
He looked twice her way and beckoned with his nose.
No quotidian this his words on tongue they froze
As tears whelmed surely up and started in their flows.
“Tis these hidden secrets that draw us up for blows
Unsaid truths that still clamp my tender heart to close.
Dress it up in satin, silk and curly bows
But don’t cover it up with poetry or prose.”
She be the querist and the questions she did pose
Deflated spirit, soul and body in new clothes
In turn he numbly fought with past to expose
A long melancholy list of quavering whoas.
“You can caw at me like a flock of angry crows,
Stand up real strong to me on all your tippy toes,
You can take my love and send it where it goes
But please don’t act like nobody really knows.”
Through daylight into night the sordid highs and lows
Carried he and she through the home and through the shows
Until worn and weary the quarreling slows
And humbled man and tempered wife repose.
“This ain’t the battle between bitter stags and does
It’s not some stupid contest that we really chose
And even though stubborn pain and hurt it grows
The warm spark and heat of lasting love still glows.”
These aren’t flames requiring alarm and fireman’s hose
No more sheltered heat in this ruptured heart it stows
For to Jesus all our love and marriage owes
A right to hope, peace, grace, truth and faith expose.
