Grew fruit and herb abundantly—
Man ruling all at God’s bequest
Was free to eat as he thought best
Except for one forbidden tree.
The cunning serpent Eve beguiled
To eat the fruit and counter Him;
The innocence of man despoiled,
From Eden’s bounteous store exiled,
The tree of life was hid from men.
By sweat and tears midst weed and thorn
Would man now feed his family,
Beneath the curse his children born
Until to dust they would return;
The case for all humanity.
In far-flung corners of the earth
By foods diverse and tastebuds trained
Man fights against disease and dearth
To bring a meagre harvest forth—
By sweat of brow is life sustained.
Subjected to futility
Creation groans beneath His hand
But He has promised liberty,
The whole creation blissfully
Enjoying peace in Beulah’s land.
Where from each land at table feast
With patriarchs of Israel
All those from north, south, west and east
For whom Christ is their great High Priest
Forever more with God will dwell
The tree of life twelve fruits will yield--
The diet of eternity,
When Heaven’s secrets are unsealed
The face of God to man revealed—
We watch and wait expectantly.
