garish in pink
braces and bangles.
When did my spring bud
blossom into this
magnificent flower?
Impish smirks,
pimples and plaits
have passed away,
to be replaced with
deep iris eyes
and summer smiles.
Buried in your heart
are hedgerow dreams
and garden party stories.
I am afraid that
your dreamy expressions
and wistful ways
are leaving you open
for an early autumn
of barbs and briers.
Brute, brawn and boys
solicit your innocents
to store in garden sheds.
Waiting, stalking
lurking for opportunity,
peacocking for your attention.
I have seen their ivy eyes,
poisoned with passion.
Poised to pounce,
on petals bending
in the summer's breeze
of a windy afternoon.
Lost in your blossom
they are not looking
beyond your prettiness.
Your heart is hidden
to teenage angst,
hormones and heroes.
Guard it well
my early morning
summer's bloom
and wait for the one
who sees your depths
and craves to listen
to hedgerow dreams,
in the succulent scent
of summer's eves.
Guard you heart
my summer's flower,
for you are a woman now.
