See her there,
the tiny girl in the toy store,
giant tears rolling down
her chubby cheeks,
as she begs her mother to buy the doll,
the one that closes its eyes
and cries “Mama.”
That’s the kind of earnestness I seek.

See him there,
the teen-ager in the batter’s box,
who yearns to make a homerun,
his eyes focused,
his every muscle straining,
as the pitcher
throws a fast ball.
That’s the kind of earnestness I seek.

See her there,
the mother,
eyes brimming with love,
pleading with her daughter
to turn from her wild ways
and become the godly woman
that she and her husband
had hoped she would
since the day she was born.
That’s the kind of earnestness I seek.

See him there,
the young man, so deeply in love,
down on one knee,
asking the girl he adores
to be his wife.
Hear the tenderness in his voice
as he promises to care for her
for all their lives.
That’s the kind of earnestness I seek.

As to the earnestness of the politician,
tirelessly pursuing votes;
of the minister, burdened for souls,
making an altar call;
of the discouraged one, long out of work,
looking for a job,
I need it;
I want it;
I must have it.
I seek it with all my heart,
as I go to my Lord in prayer,
to offer gratitude and praise for His greatness,
and to place my petitions before Him:
for salvation of the lost. . .
for our church, our community, our nation, our world. . .
for the needy, the suffering , the sorrowing. . .
for strength and guidance for me to serve as His disciple.
