To roam around in a yard
Just the perfect size,
Defined by chain link fences
With barbed wire at the top.
Free to play hopscotch,
Free to look at clouds,
Free to stand at the fence
And stare at the world outside,
Wondering what it holds.
The Pharisees have built
A circuit of love,
Designed to give
Just the perfect amperage,
Defined by perfect fuses
To gauge when we have gone too far.
We are free to roam our yard
And feel the approval
Of our authorities,
As we flow with the design.
Free to earn a smile,
Free to buy a hug,
Free to stand at the fence
And stare at smiling faces,
Wondering what love
Really feels like.
But we must not ever push our bounds,
Or climb the fences,
Lest we be empowered
And blow the fuses,
Casting our little world
Into darkness.
